Clues on the nature of Compact Steep Spectrum radio sources from optical spectroscopy

چکیده
New long-slit spectra are presented for a group of Compact-Steep-Spectrum (CSS) sources (i.e. powerful radio sources with sub-galactic size and steep spectral index at high radio frequencies) selected from the southern (δ < 10◦) 2-Jy sample of radio sources with redshift limit of z = 0.7. Their spectra are strong in emission lines (e.g. [O III]λ5007 and [O II]λ3727), as expected for such powerful radio sources. The line luminosities and ratios obtained for these compact sources are compared with those for the other sources of the southern 2Jy sample. We find that the optical spectra for the CSS sources show characteristics very similar to the extended sources of similar radio power and redshift. In particular, we find that the CSS sources follow the correlation between the radio power and [O III]λ5007 and [O II]λ3727 luminosities found for the extended sources, although there is tentative evidence that they have lower [O III]λ5007 luminosities. Also, the optical continuum spectral energy distribution (SED) and polarization properties of the CSS sources show the same variety of characteristics observed among the extended sources. The first-order similarity that we find between the spectra of CSS sources and the extended sources of similar radio power is consistent with the idea that the CSS sources are young radio sources in which the radio jets have yet to emerge from the central regions of the host galaxies.

Near-infrared spectroscopy of powerful compact steep-spectrum radio sources
We have obtained near-infrared spectroscopy of a small sample of powerful Compact Steep-Spectrum (CSS) radio sources mainly, but not exclusively, from the 3CR sample. We find no differences between the distributions in the equivalent width and luminosity of the [Oiii]5007 line for our sample and other larger, presumably older, high-redshift 3C objects, suggesting that the underlying quasar lumi...
متن کاملAn unbiased sample of bright southern Compact Steep Spectrum and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum Sources
Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are classes of compact, powerful, extragalactic objects. These sources are thought to be the earliest stages in the evolution of radio galaxies, capturing the ignition (or, in some cases, re-ignition) of the AGN. As well as serving as probes of the early stages of large-scale radio sources, these sources are good, stable, ...
متن کاملProbing the environment of Compact Steep Spectrum and GHz Peaked Spectrum sources
We present and discuss European VLBI Network UHF band spectral line observations, made to localise the redshifted 21cm HI absorption known to occur in the subgalactic sized compact steep spectrum galaxies 3C 49 and 3C 268.3. We have detected H absorption towards the western radio lobe of 3C 49 and the northern lobe of 3C 268.3. However, we cannot rule out the presence of similar amounts of H ...
متن کاملOptical spectroscopy of faint gigahertz peaked spectrum sources
We present spectroscopic observations of a sample of faint Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources drawn from the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS). Redshifts have been determined for 19 (40%) of the objects. The optical spectra of the GPS sources identified with low redshift galaxies show deep stellar absorption features. This confirms previous suggestions that their optical light i...
متن کاملProbing radio source environments via Hi and OH absorption
We present the results of Hi and OH absorption measurements towards a sample of radio sources using the Arecibo 305-m telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). In total, 27 radio sources were searched for associated 21-cm Hi absorption. One totally new Hi absorption system was detected against the radio galaxy 3C258, while five previously known Hi absorption systems, and one gal...
